GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) - The Boy Scouts of America's National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as Scouts. More than 60% of the local Scout leaders who voted today at their annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas, supported the proposal. Gay adults will still be barred from serving as Scout leaders and today's vote is unlikely to end the bitter debate over the group's membership policies.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has again exposed the rift between some of the tea party-backed Republicans like him and the party establishment. In a speech on the Senate floor today, Cruz accused the GOP establishment of being in cahoots with Democrats to raise the government's borrowing limit by disabling the GOP's ability to mount a filibuster threat that could be used to extract spending cuts from Democrats and the White House.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police have obtained the decades-old taped conversations between a Manson family disciple and his late Texas attorney. Detective David Holmes says the department has had the tapes for a couple of weeks and Robbery-Homicide Division and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office are analyzing them. The tapes are being reviewed to determine whether there's evidence that could resolve unsolved murders.

DALLAS (AP) - Three men have been sentenced to prison in a bribery case involving road and roofing contracts for a North Texas military installation. John Torrance Gilmore III received the maximum 5-year federal prison term today for his leading role in the conspiracy surrounding contracts for Sheppard Air Force Base. A government contractor was sentenced to a 1½-year term and another received an 8-month term.
