DALLAS - A shooting at an 18-story office tower in North Dallas on Monday left three people injured, including the suspected shooter.

The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. at the Four Forest building at 12222 Merit Dr., near Interstate 635.

According to police, 60-year-old Robert Randall Mustard shot 66-year-old Richard Smith and his 39-year-old son, Chris, at a financial services business they own on the third floor -- Smith Financial Services. Mustard, believed to be a disgruntled client, then shot himself, police said.

"Officers got there right on time, confronted the suspect. There were some shots exchanged," Dallas Police Lt. Andrew Harvey said.

However, police later clarified that arriving officers, hearing Mustard shoot himself, thought they were being fired upon. One officer fired at and missed the suspect, police said.

The suspect had already shot the father in the legs, police said. The son, who they said was hit in the neck, had fled the scene just before officers arrived. A witness said he saw a bloodied Chris Smith in a lobby area pleading for help to keep his father from dying.

The victims were recovering at Parkland Hospital. Both were listed in serious condition. Mustard was listed in critical condition at Baylor Hospital, according to Harvey, and was not expected to survive.

Harvey said the shooting was planned. "This is not a random offense. They were targeted. The suspect knew both of the victims," he said.

Harvey said the building, which housed several operations including offices for United Texas Bank, was on lockdown during the investigation. No one was being allowed in or out.
