DALLAS - A man on a high-speed performance motorcycle lost control on a Dallas freeway early Thursday morning and died in the crash, police say.

Brian Ballew, 31, was riding ahead of a friend around 2 a.m. and traveling northbound on Stemmons Freeway (I-35E) when he lost control on a curve near the Oak Lawn exit.

Police say he struck the guardrail, and both he and the bike flipped over the the rail and tumbled several times.

Ballew died at the scene.

His friend was some distance behind him and did not see the accident, but grew worried when he passed several cars pulled over to the side of the road, and made an immediate u-turn.

"They caught his attention, that's why he came back," said Dallas Police Lt. Jimmy Vaughan. "That's when he discovered his buddy in the ditch here."

Police say Ballew was riding a Suzuki Hayabusa, known as one of the fastest motorcycles available with a top speed of nearly 200 miles per hour.
