McALLEN, Texas - McAllen police have arrested a man over the death of his 2-year-old stepdaughter as he allegedly was trying to watch a World Cup soccer match.
Police Chief Victor Rodriguez says the man, who The Monitor identified as 27-year-old Hector Castro, is expected to be formally charged with capital murder on Monday.
Castro allegedly forced a screw or a bolt into the girl's throat to make it look like she accidentally choked.
Rodriguez said the girl suffered cracked ribs and was apparently beaten.
The chief said the stepfather told police that the girl would not stop crying as he tried to watch a World Cup match Saturday afternoon.
The name of the victim was not immediately released.
