MESQUITE, Texas - Police in one North Texas suburb are investigating an apparent murder-suicide on a quiet street.
When family members couldn't reach the couple who lived there, they asked police to check on the house in the 5600 block of Bandera Place.
Shortly after midnight on Monday, officers found the bodies of 52-year-old Godfrey Spain and 46-year-old Irene Haggerty.
According to investigators, Haggerty died from blunt force trauma. Her body was located in the foyer by the stairs. Spain allegedly hanged himself somewhere on the second floor of the home.
Both bodies were removed Monday morning at around 7:30 a.m.
Police said the couple had two children, ages 15 and 7, who were not home at the time. They said the teen boy was attending church camp and that his younger sister was visiting an aunt.
Neighbor Timeka Brown has lived on the street for the same amount of time as the deceased -- six years -- and said there was never any sign of trouble.
"They were pretty quiet. They were not a loud and a rowdy family, or anything like that. Their kids were very mannerable. Very nice kids. Very sweet kids," she said. "You never saw any distress from them."
Brown said the news of the deaths was an unpleasant surprise.
"It's shocking because my kids played here all of the time. They played basketball with their kids," she said. "And it's going to be kind of hard trying to explain to them what happened."
The couple's names won't be released until their families have been notified.
