A Dallas Police Officer and War Veteran is out of sick time but can't go back to patrolling the streets. He has seizures several times a week from a brain injury he apparently suffered in 2005 while serving in Iraq.
According to family members, Officer Andrew Litz was riding in a humvee in 2005 when the vehicle hit a land mine. Three men in the humvee were killed. Litz was never taken to a hospital he was apparently treated in the field.
After coming back to Texas, Litz started having headaches. But recently, the headaches became debilitating. He has seizures and is needing a wheelchair.
Officers who worked with Litz said he is a good officer who rarely complains.
Fellow officers are rallying around the 30-year-old who is assigned to the Southeast substation. Because he hasn't been able to work in weeks and is out of sick time, he hasn't gotten paid. Other officers are now voluntarily working some of his shifts.
His wife is a stay-at-home mom to the couple's two children, ages 4 and 5.
The utilities in the couple's McKinney home were almost turned off last week, but the Assist the Officer Foundation came up with enough money to keep that from happening for now.
And this Saturday, about a dozen officers are going to be washing cars at Lone Eagle Fighting Arts School on W. Arapaho Road in Richardson from 9 in the morning.
