FORT WORTH, Texas - A Fort Worth man has turned to FOX 4 and Facebook to try to do a good deed. He’s trying to recruit help for fixing up an elderly woman’s home.
Hector Macias said when his mother asked him to help one of her friends he thought he’d spend a couple of hours doing a little handy work. But when he saw how badly the woman needed help he said his heart got the better of him.
Macias said 89-year-old Antonia Hernandez’ home is in major disrepair.
“The leaks were so bad in her home she had to shut off the water, her only recourse because she couldn’t fix anything. Now she goes to her friend’s house to use the restroom and to get water and they try to sleep here because she has no power,” he said.
Hernandez said when it rains her roof leaks everywhere. The sheetrock in her home has rotted on several walls.
“She needs roofing done yesterday,” Macias said. “I have to get the roofing done right away. She needs plumbing done, dry wall work done and paint.”
Within hours of visiting the elderly woman, Macias set up a Facebook page to recruit other volunteers. Some have responded. But he also needs supplies and money.
“This is something I can’t turn my back on. It’s not something I’m going to leave for the next guy to do. I want to give her back her dignity is basically what I want to do,” he said.
All the while, Hernandez can’t seem to thank him enough.
