DALLAS - The number of sexual assaults in Dallas has jumped nearly 25 percent this year. But police said they have a plan to change that.

The Dallas Police Department and victim advocate groups have launched a sexual assault awareness campaign.

Officers will soon visit high schools and college campuses to educate young people. They’re trying to drive the point home that silence does not mean consent.

There will also be an increase in bike and foot patrols in entertainment districts across the city.

Finally, officers and the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission will be looking out for underage drinkers and bars that over serve alcohol.

’What we’re finding out is that alcohol is involved in 60 percent of victims. That’s becoming the number one date rape drug is alcohol,’ said Asst. Chief Cynthia Villarreal.

The campaign is focusing on education and prevention. A person convicted of a sexual assault could receive up to life in prison.
