MCKINNEY, Texas - The young woman who caused a deadly crash on a North Texas tollway will spend four years in prison.
Earlier this week Mariza Martinez was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.
Prosecutors said she was drunk when she drove the wrong way on the Dallas North Tollway. She crashed into the car driven by 16-year-old Kara Taylor, killing her and injuring her best friend.
Jurors deliberated for about eight hours before sentencing Martinez to four years in prison for the intoxication manslaughter charge. She also received 2 years in prison for the intoxication assault charge, but will serve the two sentences concurrently.
Her defense attorney had asked for leniency. He told the jury the young mother admits she made a mistake. But he blamed the teen victim for being out late at night .
Prosecutors had hoped for at least 10 years. The maximum sentence she could have received was 20 years and a $10,000 fine.
