A 91-year-old woman who's lived through the Great Depression, won world championships and carried the Olympic torch is trying something she's never done before. She's running for a seat on the Addison city council.
Fan Benno-Caris said she is serious about her campaign and thinks she has the maturity and wisdom needed to be elected on May 9.
"I just feel like the people on the council have to really cut back and watch what they are spending," Benno-Caris said. "I have the maturity and the wisdom and everything to see what can happen because I lived through the first depression."
Benno-Caris is a retired commercial real estate broker. She has no political experience, but her supporters said she's used to going for the gold and winning. She won five race walking world championships after turning 70 years old.
Her motto is "never stop moving," she said.
Benno-Caris' opponent is Kimberly Lay. Lay was appointed to fill the council position in November after another member passed away.
"I feel like I am going to run a great campaign no matter who my opponent is and I think she is a great lady. She's going to make a great opponent," Lay said.
