Awning Collapse Kills Bridgeport Teen

A Bridgeport High School cheerleader is dead and her friend was seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon in a freak accident involving a business awning.

According to Bridgeport city spokeswoman Amber Fogleman, the accident happened at about 4 p.m. in the 1100 block of Hallsell Street.

The pair of teen girls were jogging near the Club BarBell gym when its concrete and aluminum awning collapsed and fell on them, Fogleman said.

The impact killed 17-year-old Leslie Denison.

Becca Logan, 17, suffered deep cuts to the face and was taken by air ambulance to a nearby hospital. She is now listed in stable condition.

Both girls were also members of their high school's cross country team.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the awning to collapse.

Bridgeport is about 50 miles northwest of Fort Worth in Wise County.
