Crypto a Top Priority at Pools

DALLAS - Many North Texans are taking measures to prevent Cryptosporidium outbreaks like the ones that closed down pools and spray parks last summer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cryptosporidium, or crypto, is a waterborne illness that causes diarrhea and stomach cramps. The germ is resistant to chlorine disinfection found in pools.

Last summer hyperchlorination became the buzz word as pool owners dealt with the fear of crypto outbreaks. Now before the season even starts, many say crypto is their top priority.

Some are taking an expensive and high-tech approach.

The Emler Swim School is using an ultraviolet light system to essentially kill crypto before it gets into the pool. The school invested thousands of dollars per pool for the system and will use fewer chemicals to prevent outbreaks.

But, most cities will take a less expensive approach.

Arlington parks and recreation department officials said they are ready to hyperchlorinate the pools if it is needed. This year, they also will focus on public education.

“Public education about what it is and what you can do to prevent it,” said spokeswoman Kelly Drawdy.

Arlington’s campaign is complete with warning signs and post cards.

“It only takes one person getting right back in and if that person gets back in within five minutes and has diarrhea, then guess what, crypto’s back. So really, public education is the key,” Drawdy said.
