Deadly Drowning Weekend

Published : Monday, 22 Jun 2009, 6:43 AM CDT

The State of Texas is on its way to setting a grim record in child drowning deaths.

50 children drowned by the time summer officially started Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

The record number of drowning deaths was set last year, at 82.

One of the the latest deaths was Saturday, when Southlake teenager Winston Ward died at the Omni Hotel in downtown Fort Worth.

Witnesses say although the 6-foot-tall teen was an excellent swimmer, he may have struck his head doing a somersault.

On Saturday, 11-year-old John Henderson III died on Lake Worth in a boating accident. Police say he was on a plastic inner tube that collided with a personal watercraft.

A third weekend incident shows how easy it is to have an accident: a woman nearly drowned at an L.A. Fitness Club in Arlington.

She was swimming in the gym's indoor pool. It's not clear how the accident happened.
