An injured 14-year-old boy, who weighed only 60 pounds, told lawmen he hadn't been to a doctor or to school in more than four years after they found him living in a filthy RV with his father.
Deputies arrested Daniel Ballard, 30, on Thursday on charges of cruelty to a juvenile.
The malnourished boy was treated for injuries to his arm, a swollen foot, and a hurt leg.
A constable serving an eviction notice say the boy could barely stand when he came to the door, and grew more nervous as his dad failed to answer basic questions.
"I asked the father why he wasn't in school, and he said he was home-schooling him," said Constable Tony Guerra. "I knew that wasn't true."
Guerra said Ballard, who works as a grass-cutter, couldn't say when the boy had last been in school, or produce a birth certificate.
Detectives contacted the boy's mother, who lives in Arizona. She said the child had been with his father since shortly before Hurricane Katrina.
If convicted, Ballard could face up to 10 years in prison.
