A man led Dallas County constables and sheriff's deputies on a harrowing high-speed chase across several Dallas-area freeways Monday afternoon.
According to the sheriff's office, constables first tried to pull 29-year-old Shane Michel over for speeding just after 1 p.m. near the intersection of Interstates 635 and Interstate 30 in Mesquite. Once he began fleeing they learned he had outstanding felony warrants for forgery.
During the nail-biting pursuit, the suspect sedan traveled at speeds near 100 mph and came within inches of striking other vehicles. It also repeatedly left the roadway, continuing off-road on grassy, hilly roadsides, and even knocking down signs.
At one point, constables tried to spike the car’s tires near Interstate 35 and Royal Lane in Dallas.
The chase ended at about 2:30 p.m. when the car ran a red light and was struck by a pickup truck at Plano and Buckingham roads in Richardson.
Michel had to be cut out of his car. He was alert, conscious and handcuffed on the gurney, but was reportedly listed in critical condition at Baylor hospital.
The driver of the truck, Lance Anderson, was not seriously injured.
