If you've never thought of a peach orchard as a travel destination you may want to think again. This week's Lone Star Adventure takes us east of Dallas to Terrell, Texas and Ham Orchards.
The peach orchard and farm has become a full-fledged leisure time destination. Owner Dale Ham says this year they've seen a lot of local folks who are staying close to home this summer. He says the last two weekends have been very busy.
Many people come to Ham Orchards for the peach ice cream. Others come for the the cobbler, pies and fresh fruits and vegetables. Early in the season you can pick your own blackberries.
This has been a really rough year for peach growers in Texas. In Hill Country in Parker County a combination of untimely freezes and hail storms has been devastating. Ham Orchards seems to have the right combination of elevation and maybe luck. Their the peach crop has been reliable every summer.
Ham say the tastiest peaches ripen after the 4th of July. That's when business really booms at Ham Orchards, especially on weekends. It's open through August 15th.
