The 20-year-old mother told officers that someone snatched her baby from the far North Dallas apartment in the 5800 block of Preston Oaks Road at about midnight.
She said the man tried to sexually assault her and that she fought him off, police said. They said the woman reported that the intruder grabbed 9-month-old Daisja Weaver, who was sleeping in a car seat, and took off.
Officer Kevin Janse said the department decided to issue the alert around noon after investigators thoroughly interviewed the child's parents.
"It's been a long, drawn-out investigation and interview and we feel right now is the time we need to start bringing the public into it," Janse said.
Janse said the kidnapping report initially did not meet the criteria needed to activate an Amber Alert because the mother hadn't provided a detailed description of the suspect and because the parents' stories were inconsistent.
He said search teams were using specially-trained dogs and helicopters, among other means, to locate the infant.
"We're utilizing every resource we have," Janse said. "We're trying desperately to locate this child."
Janse said the parents were not suspects and that they were cooperating with police.
The mother was taken to Medical City Hospital for treatment following the reported attack and was later interviewed by investigators, police said.
The father, who was not at home at the time of the attack, was also questioned, according to police.
Investigators said the family was in the middle of moving to a new home.
