Another North Texas soldier has been killed in Afghanistan. He is the second soldier from Terrell to die in less than a month.
Just two weeks ago, the Terrell community lined roadways and streets in a solemn homecoming for 24-year-old Shawn McNabb , a combat medic killed in Afghanistan.
They will likely do it all again for 26-year-old Spc. Joseph Michael Lewis.
The Department of Defense has not yet released details about Lewis’ death. However, his family confirms their recent loss.
"We are heartbroken, but are proud of Joe's dedication and service to our country. He loved his job, country, family and friends. Joe wanted to be a soldier since he was a child. The family called him 'G.I. Joe,'" family members said in a statement.
Terrell Mayor Hal Richards said the news has cast a pall over his city. Lewis’ death overseas marks the fifth for the city of just 18,000 people since 2004.
"We have a lot of small town values and I just think an inordinate number of our kids are drawn to be in the military," he said. "We know the families or part of the families so it touches all of us here in Terrell."
Fire Chief Jim Harper has helped organize the previous homecoming processions and fully expects to organize another.
“Obviously a lot of this falls to what the family would like but the city of Terrrell will turn out and bring this young man home just like we brought all the rest of them home,” he said.
Lewis is the son of Mike and Pam Lewis. He leaves behind a wife and infant daughter.
