ROCKWALL COUNTY, Texas - Rockwall County deputy Keven Rowan rescued two women after their Honda Civic ended up in Lake Ray Hubbard early Saturday morning.
Twenty-year-old Ngoc Do and 21-year-old Nhi Hoang Tran say they were heading home after an evening out when they got lost. Ngoc Do was driving. She says she was on the phone talking to her father and didn't realize she was driving down a boat ramp and into the lake. Do says when she tried to back up the car started to float out into the lake.
Deputy Rowan was doing routine patrols when he spotted the car's brake lights just above the water. He says he then saw the two women in the backseat pounding on the window and yelling for help.
"They're screaming help me, help me. They're also telling me at the same time, I can't swim!" Rowan said.
Rowan removed his utility belt and managed to swim out to the vehicle and break a rear window to get them out. Rowan held onto both women and managed to swim back to the shore line.
The young women say the ordeal was extremely frightening because the car was filling with water and they could not tell emergency dispatchers their exact location.
Do told the 9-1-1 dispatcher, "The water was up to my neck and I told them I can't breathe. They said, you can't breathe? Where are you? I said I don't know where I am."
Recalling the ordeal and how Deputy Rowan rescued them, Tran said, "I'm so happy. He really saved my life."
"That's the whole reason I do this job is to help people. It just makes me feel awesome you know!" said Rowan.
