This week, FOX 4’s Richard Ray takes a Lone Star Adventure to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.
The center is actually a fish hatchery run by the Texas Parks and Recreation Department. It also serves to educate the public about aquatic resources and the sport of freshwater fishing.
"It's set up for kids to introduce them to fishing," said center representative Tracy Patzke. "It's pretty easy to catch fish here. Plus it has a pretty good history of Texas fishing and what's available in Texas waterways."
Spring brings many opportunities for visitors to the center.
Anglers can fish for rainbow trout and take home up to five free fish. There are bird and nature walks through the center's wetlands trail and guided tours are held the second Saturday of each month.
