Lone Star Adventure: Cockroaches

PLANO, Texas - It may be the quirkiest little museum in all of Texas. In this week's Lone Star Adventure FOX 4's Richard Ray takes us to Plano and the Cockroach Hall of Fame.

Michael Bohdan spends his mornings slaying cockroaches, but each afternoon he puts away his pest control equipment puts the cockroaches on display. A strip mall in Plano, Texas is home to the Cockroach Hall of Fame. The facility features elaborately costumed insects and one of the oddest museums in the world.

Bohdan and his cockroaches got into show biz back in the 1980s when he was Bug Man on a local kid's show called "Mr. Peppermint." In 1988 he made an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." Shortly after that he opened the museum.

Bohdan was then hired by a bug control company to put on cockroach costume contests. Over the years, he's made the rounds of national TV and radio shows, but it's his skill at bug killing that still pays the bills.

There are some real treasures in the museum, including rare insect fossils. The stars of the show are the roaches. They're dressed as celebrities, like Ross Peroach, or posed in scenes like Bugs at the Beach.

The creepiest thing at the Cockroach Hall of Fame is definitely Bohdan's collection of giant live Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. He has about 500 of them.
