Lone Star Adventure: Pickleball

LEWISVILLE, Texas - This week's Lone Star Adventure is a booming sport with a funny name. FOX 4's Richard Ray takes us to Lewisville to play Pickleball.

Some think the name is a little silly and something like wiffle ball tennis would be more appropriate and marketable. Others think Pickleball is good fit for a playful pastime that can be pretty competitive or just silly fun. It's a simple paddle game played over a tennis type net on a badminton sized court.

The game of Pickleball was invented in the summer of 1965 by a couple of Congressman from Washington state who were tired of hearing their kids complain about being bored. It's a game the entire family can play. Anyone from young children to their grandparents can learn and enjoy Pickleball.

Nadine Darnell and Roselyn Ware are Pickleball evangelists. Three times a week they organize open play at a recreation center in Lewisville and are trying to spread the game elsewhere. It's really taken off with retired people but young people show up, too.

For more information about the sport please check out the USA Pickleball Association's website .
