DALLAS - A young North Texas girl is in for a long recovery after an ATV accident.
At 11 years old Baylee Littlefield doesn’t let anything get her down. But lately it has taken everything she’s got.
“My life is not giving up. I never give up. I always try harder and hard every day to get better,” she said. But she admitted “sometimes it makes me sad.”
A week before Thanksgiving Littlefield was visiting her father. She was driving an ATV with her 14-year-old friend.
“I lost control on the road and I crashed into the tree,” she said.
Both girls were wearing helmets. Still Littlefield suffered a lacerated kidney, lacerated liver, broken shoulder, broken right hand and a brachial plexus injury that has left her left arm paralyzed.
Her mother Melinda McCown saw her as the ambulance arrived at the hospital.
“When you see that initially it’s like that’s my baby. I’m a nurse I’ve done this for 20 years. But it’s very different. It all goes out the window when it’s yours. Very hard thing to see,” she said.
Littlefield spent nearly two months in the hospital and lost about 20 pounds because of complications. She’s finally back home but she still tied to a feeding tube and can’t do a lot of the things she’s always enjoyed.
“My personality is playing outside, riding bikes, playing basketball and being active,” she said.
Her mother has spent every moment at the hospital and now cares for her at home.
“It makes me happy. She’s always been by my side and never left my side since the accident,” Littlefield said.
McCown had to stop working and her husband said meeting all the family’s needs has been a challenge. So a friend Serena Hays put up a website to provide information about Littlefield’s recovery and collect donations for the family.
“It usually came on a day we might not have enough money to get something to eat. It was very touching that people would reach out and help,” McCown said.
Life is better for Littlefield at home but she still makes several trips back to the hospital each week.
