IRVING, Texas - When contractors began preparing Texas Stadium for implosion on April 11, they were perplexed by dozens of bright yellow softballs.
Workers found the mysterious balls everywhere – above the press box, behind the nosebleed seats and even near the tunnel the Cowboys used to run out onto the field.
No one knew why they were there.
FOX 4 has since solved the mystery.
The balls once belonged to the Southern Black Softball Association , an adult softball league made up of teams from Texas, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Oscar Jordan, a board member and player, said the association held tournaments every few years at Texas Stadium up until the late 1990s.
For the tournaments, balls were brought in by the hundreds. White balls were for the day games and yellow balls were for the night games.
Players hit them all over the place. They had so many, they never went looking for them after the fact, Jordan said.
Since 2000, most of the association’s tournaments have been in Louisiana. Nighttime softball games at Texas Stadium might have faded in memory without the discovery of dozens of bright yellow balls.
