DALLAS - Many women are choosing tattoos as a way to celebrate their children, both publicly and privately.
The trend has grown even more popular in recent years with celebrity moms like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba showing others tattoos and the love for their kids are nothing to hide.
Amber Adams is a busy mother of six who hangs on to just about everything.
“I kept their outfits that I brought them home in. And because these are preemie, they are really, really tiny,” she said.
But for Adams it isn’t just about the blankets and baby books. Some things are just for her. She celebrates the lives of her three older children with floral tattoos.
“This is a sweet pea, and right here is the Z for her initial,” she said. “I call it my flower garden on my feet.”
Adams chose her feet as the canvas so she and her kids can always see them.
“I’ll be able to tell them, ‘You know what? This is the reason I got this and this is why this is so special to me because you’re special to me,’” she said.
Adams said the tattoos didn’t go over well with everyone.
“Very conservative so for me to have gotten a tattoo my mother about killed me,” she said.
She’d planned to get tattoos for her 2-year-old twin boys and then found out she was pregnant again. But now that Sofia Lynn is 1 year old, Adams said it’s about time her youngest children get their own flowers too.
“I would not change anything that I do. It’s stressful and it’s challenging especially having three under the age of two, but I look back and even on the crazy days I think I wouldn’t change this for the world,” she said.
Doctors advise mothers not to get tattoos while they are pregnant because of the risk of passing on an infection. And for portrait tattoos, artists recommend waiting until a baby turns 1 year old so that the characteristics will be more distinct.
