Popeye Jones Charged with DWI

Published : Monday, 02 Nov 2009, 11:11 AM CST

DALLAS - Dallas Mavericks assistant coach and former player Ronald "Popeye" Jones was arrested on a drunken-driving charge over the weekend.

Richardson police said motorists reported a sport-utility vehicle being driven erratically Sunday night. Officers pulled Jones over at about 9:30 p.m. in the 100 block of S. Greenville Avenue.

Spokesman Jonathan Wakefield said Jones failed a field sobriety test. Officers believed he was drunk, but he declined a breath test.

And then according to police, it got ugly.

"When the officers went to place the handcuffs on Mr. Jones he did resist by moving his hand forward instead of behind his back. They were forced to take him to the ground to get better control of him and he did sustain some injuries to his face," Wakefield said.

Jones was charged with driving while intoxicated. Wakefield said Monday he won't be charged with resisting arrest.

He was released from police custody at about 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, in an e-mail to The Associated Press, declined to say whether Jones faces any discipline.
