CARROLLTON - A man on his way to work accidentally swerved into a retention pond and had to be rescued by a passing Good Samaritan on Monday morning.

Rick Davis huddled in a blanket as rescue crews tried to locate his car in the pond near the intersection of Luna and Beltline Roads in Carrollton.

Davis said a dog ran in front of his car as he was driving south on Luna Road.

When he swerved to miss the animal, his car left the road and slid down a steep embankment and into the pond.

Davis said he tried to get out of the car but the water was too deep.

"The car floated," said Davis. "I was standing on top of the car waving, but because it's so far down the hill nobody could see me."

Davis said the car eventually sank to the bottom of the cold pond, and he started swimming to the side. But the steep bank and muddy grass made it impossible for him to get out.

Then, Davis says, a Good Samaritan appeared with a rope and a helping hand.

"The only thing I remember was his name was Eddie and that was it," said Davis.

Eddie pulled Davis out of the cold water, then made sure help was on the way. Then he got in his car and drove off.

Davis said he wanted to get a message to the mysterious stranger.

"Thank you very much for saving my life, 'cause I got stuck out there. It's not easy to get out of that car," he said.

As for work, Davis said he was going to call the boss and take the rest of the day off.
