Teen Hits and Kills Toddler Brother

DALLAS - A toddler was run over and killed Sunday afternoon by his 17-year-old sister. Police say the teen didn't realize her little brother was behind her as she backed up an SUV at their Oak Cliff apartment.

Paramedics rushed Fernando Corona to Methodist Medical Center, but doctors could not save him.

"I was in my home," said neighbor Wanda Chagolla. "I heard screaming and hollering."

Chagolla said Fernando, who was just 18 months old, followed his big sister out of their apartment at 708 Marsalis Parkway. The girl did not see her brother as she got into the truck, started it up and put it into reverse.

Another sibling ran outside to stop her, but it was too late.

Investigators believe the child's death was a tragic accident.

"Right now we're not anticipating any charges being filed," said James Bristo of the Dallas Police Department. The teenager was leaving the house to get some food.

Fernando was the youngest of six children.

"The family is going to need a lot of support, especially the parents going through this," said Chagolla.
