DALLAS - Former Texas Rangers reliever John Wetteland is in the hospital after police responded to a “possible suicide attempt” call at his house.
The Denton County Sheriff’s Department told FOX 4 Wetteland’s wife made the call for help from their Bartonville, Texas home Thursday afternoon.
She told officers that her husband has been depressed and she was afraid he might commit suicide.
When officers arrived, Wetteland reportedly came out of the house and told them he really wanted to go to the hospital.
He had no physical injuries but was taken to the Denton Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
Wetteland played major league baseball for 12 years, helping the Yankees win a World Series and then joining the Rangers in 1996.
He was part of two playoff teams before retiring after the 2000 season.
The 43-year-old father of four is currently the bullpen coach for the Seattle Mariners.
In the past he has served as a coach on the Rangers and Washington Nationals staffs.
He also spent some time working with the Liberty Christian program in Argyle, Texas.
