Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett says he’s surprised by the negative reaction to the YouTube video he calls the “ Black Olympics, ” which shows him and his brother in a food eating contest.
Many have criticized the video for dredging up old African-American stereotypes.
“I was surprised by the reaction, but at the same time I really didn’t care,” Bennett said.
Bennett spoke out about the video while mentoring kids at a summer basketball camp at a Boys & Girls Club in Fort Worth.
A couple former Dallas Cowboys have differing views on Bennett’s video.
“We gotta be careful who we give the title role model, many of us are just models playing a role, not role models," said Deion Sanders.
Former Cowboys lineman Erik Williams sees another side.
“Well you know what, comedians talk about all kinds of racist things and they get away with it, so why should he be any different, especially if he's trying to do something after his career,” Williams said.
The Dallas Cowboys said they will not comment on the video.
Bennett said the team has told him to be more careful about the videos he decides to post on the Internet.
Bennett drew criticism once before over a YouTube rap video that included derogatory terms for blacks and gays. The Cowboys fined him $22,000 for that video.
