DALLAS - A pair of highly-touted football prospects from Skyline will find themselves on opposing sidelines when the Red River Rivalry kicks off at the Cotton Bowl this fall.
Corey Nelson, the state’s 23rd ranked recruit on Rivals.com, signed a letter of intent with the Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday afternoon. His teammate Mike Davis, a prized wide receiver prospect, signed with the Texas Longhorns.
Nelson and Davis were among nearly 100 student-athletes who were introduced during a Signing Day celebration at Ellis Davis Field House in south Dallas. Dallas ISD officials say this is the largest recruiting class in the school district’s history.
“I’m very excited. I look forward to it. I look forward to the competition. I’m just ready to get down there, play and show them that I can be the best. I will be the best,” says Nelson.
While Davis’ choice came as no surprise to family and friends, Nelson’s loved ones didn’t find out about his final decision until this morning.
Nelson originally had a verbal commitment with Texas A&M but suddenly switched to Oklahoma.
“I did change my mind. It was a last [minute] thing but overall, I was happy with the choice I made because [Texas] A&M doesn’t have a linebacker coach right now and [Oklahoma] does,” says Nelson.
