MYFOX STAFF REPORT

MYFOX - IKEA is recalling more than 3 million window blinds because they could strangle young children.

The recall includes all Roman shades and roll-up blinds that were sold at IKEA stores nationwide for more than 11 years.  They were sold from January 1998 to June 2009. It also includes roller blinds that don't have certain tension devices.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Thursday after receiving the report of a 1½-year-old boy in Lowell, Mass., who nearly strangled on a blind cord.

It's estimated that about one child per month dies after strangling on a cord on a window covering. IKEA admits that if they are installed incorrectly, cords and looped bead chains could present a strangulation hazard to young children.

The 3,360,000 blinds recalled Thursday were made in India, Estonia, China, and Poland. They were distributed by Ikea Home Furnishings, of Conshohocken, Pa.

IKEA is asking consumers with the blinds to return them to their local IKEA for a full refund.

For more information consumers can call IKEA toll-free at: (888) 966-4532.
