(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Chicagoan Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti reached a new world record. Or rather his gut did.

Bertoletti ate 13 pounds of poutine in 10 minutes, earning him the title "world poutine eating champion" at the first World Poutine Eating Championship on Saturday, according to Toronto CTV.ca .

The competition, which featured 11 fellow stars of Major League Eating and three Canadian amateur eaters, aimed to see who could eat the most of the gravy-and-cheese-soaked fries. There were some injuries: two competitors vomited and withdrew.

Bertoletti is a 24-year-old chief from Chicago, weighs less than 200 pounds and has a Mohawk hairstyle. He holds 26 other types of records earned for feats such as eating 1.75 gallons of ice cream, 275 picked jalapenos and a whole turkey. His profile on the official Major League Eating & International Federation of Competitive Eating website lists his other eating feats.

"He's a machine," fellow competitor Mike Landrich said to Torontoist.com .

The website gave the following account of watching him eat:

"Watching Bertoletti eat poutine was like watching a lion dismantle a gazelle on 'Animal Planet' except on endless repeat, and in quadruple fast-forward (and with hands, which lions would use if they could). His technique was to grab a great handful of sopping fries and curds, then mash them into a kind of brown, potatoey ball, which he would then stuff into his mouth, chomp on aggressively, and swallow, while his hand went back to the box for the next bite."

The Globe and Mail said Bertoletti's prize was $750, which he said he would spend at a bar.

Bertoletti is a world record-holding professional eater.

According to Chicago Sun-Times , the Chicago resident is a member of the New York-based International Federation of Competitive Eaters, a group promoted as Major League Eating.

He is considered a star among the professional eating circle.

"Pat Bertoletti is quite simply one of the best competitive eaters ever," said Ryan Nerz, spokesman for Major League Eating, to the Sun-Times "His jaw strength is phenomenal, his swallow timing exquisite. ... [He] is extremely appealing to sponsors ... because he is young, charismatic, articulate, knowledgeable in the culinary arts and distinctive looking."

Major League Eating ranks him fourth among its professional eaters.

According to Major League Eating, he graduated from culinary school in 2007. He loves sweets and holds nearly every pie record, the website states.

Another victory has included eating 67 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
