(NewsCore) - Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said Monday night that he and his wife, Rhonda, have decided to split.

“This has been a difficult decision for Rhonda and me, but after 10 years of marriage we have decided to separate. We remain deeply committed to our children and respectfully ask that you honor our family’s privacy during this period of adjustment,” the Hall of Fame quarterback said in a statement to the Dallas Morning News.

According to Dallas County records, Rhonda Aikman purchased a five-bedroom home in Dallas' Preston Hollow neighborhood in November.

The couple met when Rhonda worked as a publicity employee for the Cowboys while Aikman was the quarterback, and they married in April 2000.

The Aikmans have two daughters together; Jordan, 9, and Alexa, 8. Rhonda Aikman has another daughter from a previous marriage.

Aikman, 44, played for the Cowboys from 1989 until 2000, winning three Super Bowls. He has worked for FOX as a color commentator since 2001, and will call Super Bowl XLV alongside Joe Buck next Sunday.
