HOUSTON (AP) - A parole officer in the Texas prison system has been convicted of three bribery-related counts and faces up to 60 years behind bars. A federal jury in Houston yesterday convicted 53-year-old Crystal M. Washington, also known as Crystal Bureau. Washington was a parole officer at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice office in Houston before being arrested and fired. Prosecutors say Washington accepted bribes from a suspected heroin dealer from 2009 to 2012 and warned the parolee of a Houston police investigation.
TYLER, Texas (AP) - Federal prosecutors say 16 people have been arrested in the investigation of an East Texas drug trafficking ring with ties to Mexico. The arrests that began yesterday involve defendants from Tyler, Longview, Houston, Dallas and Irving. An indictment returned last month charges the suspects with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana. The defendants face up to life in prison if convicted.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A 1966 Ford Mustang has been seized and the driver arrested after border officers in West Texas found nearly 80 pounds of marijuana hidden under the front fenders. Customs and Border Protection officials in El Paso say the pot was discovered in the iconic vehicle during an inspection at the Paso Del Norte border crossing. He says the drugs and the vehicle were confiscated and the driver from El Paso arrested during Saturday's incident.
LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Texas-based Bell Helicopter says it is building a helicopter assembly plant in New Orleans to assemble the company's new line of SLS - Short Light Single - helicopters. The project will bring the first modern-era aircraft assembly facility to Lafayette Regional Airport. Bell Helicopter will lease space in Lafayette for its operation in a new $26.3 million, 82,300-square-foot hangar facility. The project is expected to create 115 new jobs.
