The State Fair of Texas is underway at Fair Park. There is a bunch of new stuff to see and do. Here's a sampling of some of it.
The featured new act at the State Fair of Texas comes from China -- Cirque Shanghai -- with performers who travel the world amazing people with feats of strength and grace.
"They start training when they are little kids."
"The acrobat is a very ancient art form. It started more than 2000 years ago."
Once only performed before Chinese Imperial courts, it can now be seen four times a day in Gateway Plaza.
But there's nothing foreign about fried foods in Texas. And sampling winners in the Fair's annual fried food contest is always an adventure.
This year's Big Tex Choice for Best Tasting is Buffalo Chicken in a Flap Jack -- served with a side of maple syrup?
And Allan Weiss who's won in the fried food contest before is thinking ahead to next year.
"We do have something planned. We're already working on it," said Weiss.
"Something that will harden my arteries?"
"No," said Allan. "Everything we've got is healthy."
Whatever your plans for the day, there's a stop you should make just off the Midway.
Make time at the Greenhouse for another first time State Fair attraction -- The Tree Walker.
Cliff Stenger is a retired tight rope walker inside a hundred pounds of costume that takes some time to make and climb into.
"400 hours to make the costume, and getting dressed about ten minutes," said Stenger.
The site of this ambling foliage will amaze young and old.
"It's my mission," said Cliff. "You know we all have to make a living but I do this to promote our connection with nature. Remind people of it that's all."
The State Fair of Texas runs through October 23.
