Torrie's Take - Dallas News |

Torrie's Take

Saturday, we lost one of the best singers to ever grace a stage, Ms. Whitney Houston. Whitney paved the way for so many. She broke records and barriers! Yet, when you look at the media coverage...we are only reminded of her imperfections. Why can't the world let Whitney, finally find rest?

Here's my take:
I like most girls grew up dancing and singing in the mirror to Whitney. My personal favorites are "The Greatest Love of All", "I Will Always Love You", and "I Look to You." For me, African American women like Whitney and Oprah represented all that I could be one day, if I just put my mind to it.  So it bothers me to hear ignorant people say "who cares, she was just a drug addict?" Before anything else...Whitney was a human being and deserves compassion and respect. I don't want to preach to you, but we ALL have fallen short at some point in our lives and will continue to! Whitney's personal struggles were just that---HER PERSONAL STRUGGLES.
What matters and what folks should remember and celebrate her for is this:
Whitney Houston was in the words of Beyonce the "Ultimate Legend." Her talent was like no other. God-given talent like that simply can't be duplicated. Whitney was probably the best singer of our lifetime. Many have said no one had her vocal fluidity and purity of tone. Whitney was the most awarded female recording artist of all time. Whitney was the ONLY artist to chart seven consecutive #1 Billboard Hot 100 Hits.
I don't care what happened in that hotel room on Saturday night. I care that a young woman has lost her mother at a time when a girl so desperately needs her mom. I care that "we" the fans will never hear this icon belt out another note. I care that folks are looking past all her good only to focus on the bad. Hopefully someone out there will be saved from their own struggles by knowing her story. Let Whitney Houston rest in peace! Give someone a hug, let them know they are loved and cared about. Lastly, pay attention to people's cry for might be the only saving grace they see.

Happy Valentine's Day...
