An early-morning accident on the access road of a major Dallas freeway claimed the life of a car's passenger and put the driver in the hospital.
The accident happened about 4:20 a.m. on the service road of the John Carpenter Freeway (Highway 183) at Regal Row.
Police say a car struck a metal utility pole and ricocheted into the intersection and burst into flames.
At least two passers-by saw the flaming car and managed to pull the driver out. However, the flames were too intense for the rescuers to reach the passenger in time, and that person died at the scene.
Investigators say it appears the driver was southbound on the service road when he lost control.
Police closed both directions of Regal Row for some time to gather information about the wreck.
It's not clear exactly why the accident happened, or if speed or alcohol were involved.
The names of the victims have not been released.
