DALLAS -

A 17-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and stabbed on her way to school Wednesday morning.

Dallas police say the teen was walking to the DART bus stop in the 4700 block of Maple Ave. when a man grabbed her and dragged her behind a dumpster.

The assault happened about 7:30 a.m., but the teen lay undiscovered until at least 9 a.m. when an employee of a nearby business found her and called 911.

DPD launched its Air One helicopter and scoured the area, finally locating the man hiding in a creek bed nearby, off Maple Ave near Clara Street.

Police identified him as 59-year-old Tommy Robinson, who is homeless and has a criminal record. He was charged with aggravated sexual assault.

Police do not believe he stalked the girl. They think she happened to cross the suspect's path at the wrong time.

She remains hospitalized in critical condition.
