Well, it's hard to believe but it's that time of year again. Friday began our Saint Baldrick's Fox Chicago Schools Challenge.
For the next four weeks, every Friday morning we'll bring you the stories of some brave kids battling cancer, and the friends, family and medical professionals helping them.
Patrick Elwood visited Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where the place was rocking with good vibes.
Love was in the air and hair was on the floor. First up was the pediatric doctors with a little help from a little guy named Thomas Smith, who is battling cancer himself.
Advocate Christ is one of the leading pediatric cancer hospitals in the nation. Through Saint Baldrick's, your donated money is put to work where they are saving lives everyday.
Kids like Evie, her two big sisters, and her mom. And Sami, who you may remember from last year at this time except now she's only a few weeks away from being done with treatment. Her mom was a little too shy to go on cam! But not these ladies: Lisa Boland and Aileen Fitzgerald.
Lisa works at the hospital with these kids and says losing a little hair is a-ok in the effort to raise a lot of cash for the kids!
Boland and Fitzgerald raised $15,000 and aren't done yet!
About 40 miles from downtown, Plainfield North High School is home to 2,400 students. These Tigers are stepping up to our St. Baldrick's Fox Chicago Schools Challenge.
Earlier this week they invited me out to see their school and hear their stories. Every year cancer kills more kids than anything else! Sophomore Niko Burton knows that all too well.
Senior Kerry Travalik is ready to help. She has already raised $3,000 with a goal of $5,000 altogether.
Brendan Cassidy has joined the ranks of these high schoolers again for the fourth year in a row.
But the story of Plainfield North doesn't begin and end here. Marina Kosak is a teacher and organizer of their event.
And keeping with tradition, what would our Fox Schools Challenge be without some on-court action, as well? Patrick Elwood offers $100 donated in the name of whomever makes the shot. Liam McHugh answers the call and makes it!
