Two 18-wheeler collided in Alvarado. One burst into flames.A terrible early-morning crash between a tanker truck and an 18-wheeler put two drivers in the hospital and closed a major freeway -- most likely through Friday's rush hour.
The accident happened on I-35W northbound at County Road 604, about a mile north of Highway 67. A witness tells FOX 4 that one of the drivers had struck a concrete barrier and stopped to inspect his rig.
The second truck approached from behind and struck the first disabled rig.
One of the trucks was carrying a cargo like mattresses; the second was a tanker which burst into flames.
All northbound lanes of I-35W are closed, including the access road. At 6:30 a.m., all southbound lanes were reopened.
FOX 4 traffic reporter Chip Waggoner says traffic northbound on I-35W should detour on Cummings Drive north, cross Highway 67, go past CR 604 to FM 917 and head back to I-35W.
He also says Highway 67 is backed up by people who are trying to head north on I-35W, but find that they cannot.
