Man Booked in Non-Fatal Shooting of 2 Officers

PHOENIX (AP) — A Phoenix man has been booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of two police officers.

Michael Ruben Alvarez, 36, was booked into Maricopa County jail Monday on two attempted murder charges, four counts of aggravated assault and one count each of burglary, car theft and unlawfully having a weapon. He does not yet have an attorney.

Police say they tried to question Alvarez on Aug. 4 when he fired at them, grazing one officer in the head with a bullet and shooting another in the arm. Both officers were treated and released from a hospital the same day.

Alvarez was critically injured in the shootout but appeared before a judge Monday in a wheelchair. The judge ordered him held on a $750,000 bond and set a hearing for him next week.

The judge declined to appoint Alvarez a public defender because he notified the court that he would hire his own attorney.

Court paperwork released Tuesday lists Alvarez as a homeless man addicted to drugs.

Police said Alvarez first fled officers on a bicycle on Aug. 4 before pulling into the driveway of a west Phoenix home and pulling a gun. That's when he shot at the two officers, hitting them both, the court records say.

Police say Alvarez then went into the home and unsuccessfully tried to get the homeowner's car keys before he came out the front door and again fired at officers, who returned fire.

Police say Alvarez then crawled into the open driver's door of a police car and raised his weapon again, only to be shot by police numerous times. Alvarez then was arrested and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
