The Fort Worth Independent School District recently made an embarrassing discovery. The name of one of its schools is misspelled.
Eight years ago the district was proud to name Sunrise Elementary School after the woman who was its first teacher – Mrs. Mary McMillan. But somehow instead of Sunrise McMillan, FWISD named the school Sunrise McMillian.
"Just thinking wow, all the things we have to do now to fix one mistake," said Dr. Marion Mouton, the school's principal.
Mouton said the error is on the side of the building. It's on signs, awards, poster boards and even his name badge.
"It's gonna be hard for the teachers to get used to not having the ‘i' in there. Just got an email today saying, ‘Okay, how's our name actually spelled?'" he said.
FWISD learned about the mistake after a recent call from Mrs. McMillan's family. It's not sure how it became misspelled or why no one noticed it sooner.
The task of once again changing the school's name won't be easy.
"It has to be changed at the TEA. It has to be changed on letterhead and we're going through that process right now," said Clint Bond, FWISD's spokesman.
That's not all. Even Google Maps points to McMillian Elementary, not to mention the school's Facebook page and several other websites that reference the school.
Employees like school counselor Anita Ruffin-Hawthorn will even have to work on how to say the school's name properly.
"Sunrise McMillian and now Sunrise McMillan," she said.
But there's a lesson in the story for students.
"Check your work," she said.
