Dallas police issued a capital murder warrant for a 16-year-old girl who they say killed a rival teen's grandfather during a home invasion Sunday morning.
"He was defending his family, his wife and his grand kids," said the victim's niece, Christina Lopez.
Sixty-six-year old Lorenzo Moreno is remembered as a hard-working family man, a loving grandfather who made the ultimate sacrifice to save one of his own.
"This is a nightmare," said the victim's sister-in-law, Nita Moya. "This is a tragedy. This wasn't for him. They didn't take a man, they took a real good man."
Police say Moreno was shot and killed when at least eight teenagers – including three girls – strong-armed their way into his home. Moreno's 16-year old granddaughter, wife Adelia Moreno and son Ricky Moreno, were also brutally beaten as they tried to defend themselves from the intruders.
Investigators believe the 16-year-old was the intended target of the attack.
"He said they were young, they were young," Moya said. "They opened the door and try to force themselves in, and he fought them."
Police say an ongoing feud between Moreno's granddaughter and one of the female teenaged suspects triggered the crime.
Detectives have not released the name of the suspected shooter.
Meanwhile, Moreno's wife, 34-year-old son, and 16-year-old granddaughter are recovering.
"Ricky is horrible. He can't even open up his eyes and he's the one who fought them off as much as he could," Moya said. "Della's got her leg shattered."
Relatives told Fox 4 News the 16-year-old victim suffered multiple head wounds and is struggling with her grandfather's loss. The crime has left family members distraught, devastated and desperate for justice.
"Please give up yourself because you're only hurting yourself and your family," Lopez said. "You took a life of a grandfather - he has grandchildren."
The 16-year old girl knows the suspects who attacked her and her family. Police are investigating this case as four crimes – capital murder and three aggravated assaults. Relatives said the teen suspects were seen driving off in a car and in a van.
Police say they also stole a television.
