Clarice Tinsley's Hometown Hero this week is Felder Fitzgerald, who says he's 860.4 months old. That makes the grandfather 71 years young – virtually a big kid.
Fitzgerald was a professional musician. He's played piano for Flip Wilson, Phyllis Diller and other greats in Los Vegas, Reno and Tahoe. When he stopped performing he fell in love with trains. Now he combines his two loves at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.
On Monday's Fitzgerald plays jazz, pop, ragtime and more for the patients, parents and staff. Music from the piano fills the hallways and you'll see kids dancing, laughing and feeling good.
He wears a train engineer's cap while he plays because he's the guy who keeps the trains running at Children's Medical Center. Twenty-two years ago he and two other friends created the iconic trainscape in the lobby. Countless kids and parents have been captivated watching the model trains speed by different landscapes carrying cargo and tiny figures.
Whether it's playing the piano or tinkering with trains, Children's Medical Center says Fitzgerald is good medicine for young patients.
