Rocker Turned Rancher Sentenced to Probation

Posted:

The rocker turned rancher with the disgusting farm won't be going to jail.

Steve Banch has a lot of costs to pay, but will avoid jail time if he completes 15 months of probation. He pleaded no contest to several misdemeanors last month relating to the animals on his Holly farm.

Last spring, FOX 2's Rob Wolchek confronted Banch. His neighbors complained that several of his cows died over the winter and he was letting the pigs eat their bodies.

Wolchek showed Banch a picture and asked him whether it showed pigs eating the carcasses. "Probably, yeah," he responded. "It's good protein source."

Neighbors provided Wolchek with graphic photos of the dead animals and his cameramen took their own video of rotting cow heads littering his property.

Banch was cited by Oakland County Animal Control for failure to bury and five counts of animals running at large.

Even after his initial story, Wolchek received reports of farm animals escaping through his fence.

Monday, Banch appeared before Judge Kelley Kostin for what everyone hopes is the last time. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail held "in abeyance" and suspended upon completion of his probation term.

He was also sentenced to 112 hours of community service and must attend outpatient treatment to mental health and life adjustment counseling.

His fines and court costs add up to almost $3,000.

Steve Banch's farm appears to be in much better shape than it was when Wolchek first went out there in the spring, but Banch says he's moving to an organic farm in Alpena.

Banch will be allowed to take his animals with him when he moves, and his cows and pigs will be looked after. Part of his probation says Animal Control can randomly inspect any farm he owns or operates.
