Divers Search For Missing Joann Romain

Posted:

Volunteers searched the frigid waters of Lake St. Clair on Saturday in hopes of finding a missing woman.

Joann Matouk Romain of Grosse Point Woods went missing on Tuesday night. She hasn't been seen since.

"We don't have a lot of visibility," said Lee Oberle.

Oberle is with the Midwest Technical Recovery Team. He says the search area is vast and the lake conditions are poor.

Romain was last seen at the St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church. Police found her Lexus in the parking lot and footprints leading to the lake. First thoughts drift towards suicide but family members think something more sinister happened to the 55-year old.

"We think someone took her. We have had a few leads. The panic button was set off in the car she was in, " said daughter Michelle Romain.

For now, underwater rescue divers are focused on Lake St. Clair. They brought in cadaver dogs to help narrow the search grid.

"One of the dogs alerted which means it smelled odor out of water. We put the divers in," said Bill Robinette, Director of the Midwest Technical Recovery Team.

For nearly eight hours on Saturday, 20 divers worked in teams of two combing the shallow water. They say because of the freezing temperatures, they know if Romain is in the lake and they don't find her soon, she may stay lost for months.

Oberle added, "In this cold of water, bacteria doesn't cause the body to float, so it could be down until springtime."

Crews will resume their search on Sunday morning.
