Avid bike rider says helmet needed to stay safe

Posted: Updated:

Maybe you're reluctant to wear one, but a serious bike rider says to stay safe you need a helmet.

"They've repealed the helmet law for motorcyclists, but we always suggest a helmet," said Mike Brandstadter.

He has heard the stories and seen the evidence.

"More than once a month I have somebody come in to me, bring in a helmet that is no longer useable and tell me that the paramedics tell them that they wouldn't have made it perhaps without that."

At D&D Bicycles in Berkley, Brandstadter will tell you the most important thing is that your helmet feels good.

"It's comfortable, it's easy, it doesn't apply pressure across the forehead, around the crown of the head or at the back of the head, so again, comfort's our main concern."

Brandstadter rides his bike to work every day and whether you want to be a bike commuter or just get some good exercise on two wheels, the choices are endless.

"Some people have bad knees, hips or ankles, bad backs, bad necks.  We want to find out what is going to make a bike work for you.  [There are] a lot of different bikes made these days and because of baby boomers getting older in age, a lot of the bikes are a lot more comfort oriented these days."

Shock absorbers, upright handle bars, wider seats, or for some real padding, bike shorts.

"The more that you spend on a short, the better quality the padding is going to be on the inside of that, and that pad corresponds with the seat shape."
