Marine Cpl. Wayne Erickson is buried at Dallas National Cemetery.
DALLAS -
A Marine who died during World War II was laid to rest Thursday, 68 years after his family was told he was lost at sea.
Family members paid their respects to Marine Cpl. Wayne Erickson at the Dallas National Cemetery.
The 19-year-old died in 1944 during a training mission off the coast of Australia.
Erickson's family thought he'd been lost at sea until a recovery mission brought back remains from the plane crash.
"It's not a sad ending. It's happy because we finally have closure. We get to give our respects to him for his service and my mom and grandmother would be very, very happy to know their son and brother are home and with family," said Terry Sutton, his niece.
DNA tests also identified the other members of Erickson's flight crew.
