Teacher Union Could Sue DPS

Posted: Updated:

The Detroit Teachers Union could soon be suing the Detroit Public Schools because of contract violations and excessive layoffs.

DTF President Kieth Johnson is upset with the district because he says the current layoffs and teacher evaluation process violates teacher union contracts. DPS gave 4,100 teacher layoff notices in April. The district is currently facing a $327 million deficit.

The union contract needs to be renewed June 30th, but no contract talks have happened yet.

"We didn't start this fight. But you can be damn sure that we will finish it," said Johnson.
